Discretion combined with performance
Discreet, the Chabasse cognac house remains one of the most successful Angerian companies. 99% of its sales are made abroad.
Behind the rather austere facades in rue Élysée-Loustalot, hides one of the most beautiful Angerian success stories. For nearly thirty years, René-Luc Chabasse has taken over the reins of the Cognacs of the same name. And the company, which employs eleven people, has seen its turnover rise steadily to €3.6 million in 2012. It is normal that we do not hear about this cognac house because 99% of its turnover is ensured by export sales.
Present in 31 countries
All you have to do is go into the cellar to discover crates of cognac leaving here for China and there for Ukraine. The Internet has boosted sales considerably for this company, which markets its products under two brands: Chabasse, of course, and Bowen. Producing some 250,000 bottles per year, spread over a range of around twenty different products, the Angerian company founded in 1818 is doing well. "It's true that things are going pretty well," says René-Luc Chabasse, "but is it going to last long like that? »
The question exists but it does not prevent us from investing. In 2011, work to comply with the HACCP standard was carried out. Also in 2011, Maison Chabasse acquired the Saint-Robert vineyard in Saint-Bris-des-Bois. "This will allow us to have a stock of eaux-de-vie, to get in touch more easily with winegrowers," says the president of SAS (société par actions simplifiées) Chabasse.
In the movie "Grace Kelly"
"In 2012, we acquired, for 30,000 euros, a machine to laser engrave our bottles, an operation made necessary to further improve traceability and discourage counterfeiting," the president explains. With an extensive network of distributors throughout the world (in 31 countries), Chabasse Cognacs also attend trade fairs (notably Prowein in Düsseldorf next spring) to find new outlets. Served in prestigious hotels, notably at the Hôtel Meurice in Paris - where a cocktail, Magalie's dream, was made with Bowen cognac as a tribute to Magalie Chabasse, the company's communications manager -, in Saint-Barthélémy or at Villa Romana in Saint-Tropez, Dubai, Cognacs Chabasse should market a new range of precious drinks in 2013. The year that will begin in a few weeks' time will also be marked by the presence of the Anger brand on the big screens (see our November 21 edition). We will indeed be able to see Chabasse Cognacs in the film "Grace Kelly" with Nicole Kidman
